After an accident, your repair estimate may list replacement parts for your bumper, fender, mirror, or headlight. Many drivers are surprised to learn there is more than one kind of part, and that they may have a say in which is used. Here is what to know before your repair begins.

What Are OEM Parts?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. These parts are made by the same manufacturer that built your vehicle and are designed for your specific make and model. Benefits typically include exact factory fit and alignment, manufacturer-approved materials and specifications, consistent quality and durability, and compatibility with your vehicle's safety systems.

What Are Aftermarket Parts?

Aftermarket parts are made by companies other than the vehicle manufacturer and are designed to function like the original. Common examples include body panels, bumpers, mirrors, and lighting components. Many are made to industry standards and may perform similarly to OEM parts, but quality varies by manufacturer. Some may need extra adjustment during installation or may not match factory specifications as closely.

What About Recycled Parts?

A third option is recycled (used) parts, which are original parts taken from another vehicle. Your estimate may include these as well.

Your Parts Choices in Indiana

As we understand Indiana's rules, when an insurer pays for a repair, it must provide written notice that you have the right to approve the type of parts used, and you should be offered a choice among new OEM, new non-OEM aftermarket, and recycled or used parts. For vehicles five years old or newer, insurers must give the policyholder the option to approve OEM parts. For older vehicles, your policy may determine the part types, and an insurer may specify aftermarket or recycled parts if they meet the requirements for reasonable repair.

Policies vary, and this is general information, not legal advice. Review your policy and estimate, and ask your insurer if you have questions about your coverage.

Questions to Ask Before Approving Your Estimate

  • Which parts on the estimate are OEM, aftermarket, or recycled?
  • Does my policy or my vehicle's age affect which parts can be used?
  • How will each part be inspected for fit and safety before installation?
  • Does the parts choice affect my repair timeline?
