Why training matters more than ever

Cars aren't built the way they were 20 years ago. Modern vehicles use high-strength steel, ultra-high-strength steel, aluminum and other advanced materials, along with sensors and driver-assistance technology. Each of these can call for specific repair methods, and what works on one vehicle may not be appropriate for another. Keeping up takes ongoing training, not a one-time class.

I-CAR Gold Class

I-CAR is the collision industry's training organization. Gold Class is an I-CAR shop-level recognition, and Curry Collision Center holds it. Technicians can also earn individual I-CAR recognition, including Platinum, by completing extensive role-specific training and keeping up with ongoing coursework. Our technicians have also completed I-CAR welding training for repairs involving welded components, including advanced materials like high-strength steel and aluminum. For the full details of what the designation involves, see I-CAR's own website, which we link to from our certification page.

The GM Collision Repair Network

Curry Collision Center participates in the GM Collision Repair Network. Based on the program, that means having manufacturer-approved repair equipment, advanced structural repair tools, access to GM repair procedures and technical information, technician training on GM vehicle systems, and the ability to repair advanced safety technologies. For owners of Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles, the practical benefit is that repairs follow the manufacturer's procedures and use OEM GM parts where the repair calls for them.

Questions to ask any body shop

  • What certifications does the shop hold, and are they current?
  • Have the technicians who will work on my vehicle completed training for this type of repair?
  • Does the shop follow the manufacturer's repair procedures for my make and model?
  • What parts will be used: OEM, aftermarket or recycled? Who approves that choice?
  • How will you address sensors and driver-assistance systems after the repair?
  • How will you keep me updated during the repair?

Certification is not a guarantee, but it's a good start

No badge replaces good communication and careful work. But training, the right equipment and access to repair procedures give a shop the foundation to do a repair properly. And whichever shop you choose, remember that you have the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. Your insurance company may recommend a shop, but the decision is yours.
